This official site for The Big Sing is designed to be administered and edited by a collective of students and teachers.

If you would like to contribute to this site, as a student or staff Editor, or with pictures or YouTube links from your choir, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Get a WordPress username
  2. Email the WebMeister and say “Yeah, I wanna be an Editor”.
  3. Contribute to keeping the blog active, interesting and professional

It’s important that you realise that, as an Editor, you have lots of power over with site– and lots of responsibility too.

Being an Editor means that you have lots of control over content. You could:

  • add your own posts (interesting YouTube files? A link to another choir-related blog?)
  • edit other peoples’ work (and fix mistakes)
  • upload pictures and videos of your choir
  • edit and delete inappropriate comments

It would be awesome to have two students from each school sign on as Editors of this site.

No experience with blogs? No problem! You don’t need to know the difference between html and h.a.n.d. to work this blog. You’ll find some helpful online resources below.

You can also leave us a comment here.

Resources– to help you with your blogging. Editors, please add more!

Blogging in the Arts

3 Guidelines of Blogging:

  • Posts: these are temporary, fleeting, appear on the front page for a moment. Keep them coming, keep them changing, post anything that’s interesting and post often (a new post or two every day?)
  • Pages: these are permanent, informative, constant. At least that’s what people will expect. Don’t mess with them so much. If you do, choose to update rather than add/delete a page
  • “DELETE is a last resort”: Old content is good; it is the site’s history. Lots of things can be hidden (“unpublished”). Even a nasty comment can be “unapproved”

  • Editors– Editors may choose to add their name here

Chris, it is doubtful that the Taranaki programme will be available until a few days before the local BIG SING / Kids Sing both are held on the one night Thursday 14th June at City West Church. Trevor C NP.

Why are they tickets not coming up on the Ticketek site? we have reached 11th July?

        • 12 July, 2011 5:31 pm

Apologies– tickets are in the works, but not yet ready for the Ticketek site. Mea culpa– official word was that tickets would be available 11 July “or soon thereafter”, which is what I should have posted.

Will post the link ASAP when Ticketek has tix available.

      Chris,
I have yet to find out how to upload photos to the Big Sing page.
On the Taranaki page you will find a news item about the local Kids Sing and Big Sing that is a combined event in Taranaki.
If I want to login to the Big Sing page do I use my nzcf member details?

When will christchurch results be posted?

      • 17 June, 2011 1:53 pm

        Hi Nikki,

My sources tell me that Canterbury don’t actually have awards for their region. Each region decides on their own awards, and Canterbury doesn’t award any . . . awards. Nor do they do a gala concert in the evening.

Sorry, but I guess we will just have to wait for the Finale invitations to see which Canterbury choirs were tops!

Hi Lynn, well it’s early days yet, but we’re definitely thinking about various options and what will work best for everyone. We’ll keep you posted.

We are announcing today that the Finale will be moved to Wellington — one week earlier than planned; it’ll now be Mon 22- Wed 24 August.

We’re really lucky to be able to get the Wellington Town Hall for this event — it’s usually booked at least a year in advance. And it’s great that the Wellington committee are happy to take over a year earlier. We wish all the Christchurch choirs our very best and look forward to the Finale.

      Hi there,
Could you please tell me the restrictions and regulations for choir uniforms for The Big Sing?
I am researching and designing a choir uniform and want to be specific.
      Thanks so much

      • 10 February, 2011 10:04 pm

Wow! Haven’t had this kind of question before! I don’t know of any restrictions on uniforms. Many school perform in school uniform, many perform in uniquely-designed performance outfits. And there are also casual/ travel uniforms (polo shirts) in the mix. Up to the individual choir.

You might like to check out The Big Sing YouTube channel for a sampling of choir apparel from the recent past.

And I suggest you consider the performance venue– what colour is the stage/ background where the choir will most often perform?

Regarding The Big Sing venues, the town halls of the main centres mainly have wooden stages (if I remember correctly), so dark-coloured uniforms stand out well. Some regionals take place in theatres with black curtains, so dark uniforms can get lost.

Hope that helps. Anyone else got ideas or suggestions?

Yep, there aren’t any Big Sing requirements about uniforms. As Chris says, lots of schools use their regular uniforms or a dress version of that. Some have costumes designed specially for the choir — and you’ll see some of these on the Youtube clips Chris mentions.

I suppose the uniforms generally reflect the style of the school, so a few choose not to wear uniforms at all — perhaps just different coloured tee-shirts and jeans or something.

Actually, Jane. My reply was a bit of a cop-out. I care passionaltely about choir uniforms and have lots of ideas about what works well and what doesn’t. If you want to explore these further I’d be happy to talk to you. Feel free to contact me on 021 523 015, if you like.

Sorry for the slow reply. We’re looking for information about Grace Park’s composition and will let you know as soon as we have something useful.
