You will be able to start watching tonight. The last videos are loading now as we have been called away for a funeral. The videos should start to appear in about 30 minutes and will cover all sessions and the Gala. The missing videos are the individual songs for possible mash-ups. Mp3s will come later in the week.

The final batch of audio and video files are now online. All sessions are now available by choir and each song is individually available as both video and audio.

Thank you to the organisers of the NZCF Big Sing. As usual, the event was an outstanding tribute to you…resulting from the gifting of expertise and of countless volunteer hours of labour. Congratulations also to the students, staff, old boy and girl volunteers and caregivers of each college. All of the choirs showed tremendous maturity and focus, as well as having sung beautifully. It was an experience that the students of Aorere College will never forget. Thank you.

The negative comment from Muriel about the camera work was uncalled for. It is completely unrealistic in a competition of this size to expect the camera operators to know where their camera should be pointing (e.g. soloists) at different moments in the music. Think about it – this would require every choir to rehearse the 100+ songs for the camera crew and producer. The live web stream was a fantastic service which I was lucky to be able to make use of.

Thank you Andrew, you understand the issue.

I was the Director for the event. As well as directing 6 cameras, I was monitoring audio,, doing the graphics – and monitoring the Internet webcast (the encoders, and the connection). I also controlled 3 cameras remotely. I was also monitoring the 2 recorders of the feed, which later get edited for the videos and DVD.

There were 6 cameras in the hall. 3 with opertators and 3 robots (remote controlled cameras). One camera was operated by a student from Tawa College.

In the break between sessions, we tried to watch the sound checks, but we also needed food and water and maybe 40 winks. We also used that time to prepare the captions for the next session.

Our guidance was a spreadsheet listing what each choir would sing. We did get a score reader on tuesday and wednesday that made life ,much easier. Otherwise it was guesswork trying to work out where a soloist would appear from. The “action” songs are a nightmare to predict. Our score reader on Wednesday (James) was brilliant and Murray Cameron sat alongside me and gave extra hints on wednesday.. That was a huge help.

It would be nice if Music Directors provided us with a map of where soloist will be, just as it would be handy if the music submitted was what they actually sing, not the original composition. In the real world these things don’t happen. Equally in the real world, even with intercoms, programme monitors, and tally lights, a director will catch a camera moving (repositioning). Thats just real life. We work hard to avoid it, but fatigue, bad luck, limited info about a song, etc all comes in to play. The camera guys were on their feet concentrating 100% for 3 days. I think we did a reasonable job with what we had.

      And we thoroughly enjoyed it.
